My Partner Is Pressuring Me to Have an Abortion
May 6, 2025
An unexpected pregnancy is a lot to handle on its own, and when your partner is pressuring you to choose abortion, you may feel stuck, confused, or even fearful. Take a deep breath and remember: this is your pregnancy, and only you can decide what’s right for your body and your future.
If you’re feeling pressured, there are some steps to help you take back your voice and make a decision that reflects your values and goals.
Prioritize your safety and well-being
If your partner is threatening you, verbally abusive, or making you feel unsafe, your immediate priority should be your safety. You can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (opens in a new tab) at 800-799-7233. They’re available 24/7 to help.
Even if the pressure doesn’t involve abuse, it’s still important to recognize how it may be influencing your thoughts. One study of women who reported emotional difficulty after abortion found that 75% (opens in a new tab) felt at least some pressure to have an abortion. Many of these women later experienced emotional and mental health struggles such as guilt, shame, regret, low self-worth, and anxiety.
Your decision should be yours, made from a place of clarity, not pressure.
Understand all your options
Abortion is one option, but it’s not your only one. Parenting and adoption are also paths you have the right to explore without judgment.
Parenting can feel intimidating, but you don’t have to do it alone. With the right support, many women find the strength and confidence they didn’t know they had. The Well Clinic offers no-cost resources to help you prepare if you’re considering parenting.
Adoption is another loving option. You can choose the adoptive family and the level of contact you want in the future. Adoption isn’t “giving up”—it’s making a thoughtful decision for your child and your circumstances.
Take time to learn about each path so you can decide what’s truly best for you.
Talk to your partner when you’re ready
You have the right to set boundaries around this conversation. When you feel emotionally ready, share your thoughts and let your partner know how you feel. Try to have an open and honest dialogue, but remember, even if you disagree, this is your decision.
At the end of the day, it’s your body, your future, and your choice.
